Three Things to Consider Before Hedgehog Adoption
It’s a huge responsibility and a lot of research has to be done before adopting a hedgehog. To help you with your decision, let’s look at the trivial things that have to be considered before the adoption.
Hedgehogs are tropical creatures so an appropriate temperature modulation is required to keep them healthy. The temperature can vary from 72 Fahrenheit (22 degree Celsius) to 75 Fahrenheit (24 degree Celsius) depending upon the hedgehog’s requirement which can be gauged by regular monitoring.
A heater can be used in the room where the hedgehog is kept to keep the room warm at all times.
A ceramic heat emitter or a space heater could be used. It is essential to keep the environment warm because cold environments can make the hedgehog sick and can even result in its death. The hedgehog must also be exposed to light for at least 12 hours every day.
Home Sweet Home (Cage Specifications)
Hedgehog adoption is not an easy task. You have to ensure that the little pet stops hale and hearty in its cage. The tiny ball of quills requires ample space for movement. Here is a cage of about 3-4 square feet should be preferred.
The cage should be made up of either glass or plastic and should be well ventilated. Another important aspect to consider is that the cage has high walls so that the hedgehog is unable to climb out of the cage.
Hedgehogs travel long distances in search of food. Confinement would certainly be a turn off for the little creature. It is advisable to add a wheel in the cage to keep him engaged. The wheel should be approximately 10 “-12” in diameter and should have a solid floor. It also needs to be regularly cleaned as the hedgehog might defecate on the wheel. Bucket wheel is an excellent choice.
Hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures, ie, they are active during the night. Therefore the cage should not be placed in the bedroom if you do not wish to get disturbed while sleeping. Some hedgehogs may show a certain amount of activity during the day but they usually prefer to save all the running around for the night.
The cage should have solid floors. It should be devoid of holes, wires, loose threads and rungs to ensure that the hedgehog’s tiny discharge feet are not injured. For bedding, dried pine shavings or fabric cage liner can be used.
Do not use cedar or corn cob bedding under any circumstances as they will cause respiratory problems. If any other form of bedding is used, make sure that the hedgehog is comfortable with it and does not eat it as it might choke him.
Fresh food and water should be provided to the hedgehog every day in his cage. Ensure that high protein content food like chicken, egg white is given to him. Hedgehogs are bug eaters so silkworms, crickets and mealworms sum up to a sumptuous feast for them

Like other pets, the hedgehogs crave for love and attention. You should be able to devote some amount of your time for the well being of the hedgehog. Not all hedgehogs are friendly and learn quickly. You have to be patient if you want your pet hedgehog to trust you.The hedgehog may roll into a ball or poop if scared.
Remember not to punish him for such activities. Just like with humans, you have to work on building an amicable relationship with him. Once the hedgehog trusts you and reciprocates to your love, you will enjoy playing with the adorable little piece of joy. Hedgehog adoption is a boon for life.
